Fourth Grade

Fourth grade is a year of rapid academic, social, and physical growth. The children are increasingly more aware of the world around them and are constantly asking questions and seeking information on a multitude of topics. The 4th graders are expected to work more on their own. Homework will be assigned and the students are responsible for its completion. The students will be expected to do reports and projects. Organizational skills are also stressed in 4th grade.

There are three NYS Assessments given in 4th grade: ELA, Mathematics and Science. Much emphasis is placed on preparing 4th graders for these rigorous examinations.

The English Language Arts program includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, and spelling. Reading involves the use of children's literature as well as a basal reader. As students develop and strengthen their ability to write. Using this model, the process writing approach is followed. Students choose a topic, write, conference, revise, and edit and sometimes publish.

In Mathematics, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, probability and rounding are taught. The children must have a solid understanding of addition and multiplication facts. Problem solving and math reasoning skills are also emphasized.

In Social Studies, the emphasis is on the study of New York State. The geographical regions, Native Americans, history of New York State, cities, local history and the history of our nation as it relates to New York State are integral components of the social studies program in 4th grade.

In Science, the units covered will include plants and animals, land and water, electrical circuits, the solar system and health.

Students in 4th grade have the opportunity to take instrumental music lesson. Students are responsible to make-up any missed work due to instrumental music lessons.

Parents will need to provide a quiet place in the home for their children to complete assignments, review mathematics facts, study and read. Parents may help by asking children spelling words, reviewing vocabulary or studying for a test with their child. The use of the agenda to check assignments is one such tool to monitor a child's progress. Parental support and assistance will enhance success in 4th grade.
