Special Education Services

A full complement and array of special education programming options are available at Northwood. Special Education services may be warranted to address a variety of handicapping conditions such as learning disabilities, visual, speech or hearing impairments, mental retardation, autism, perceptual problems, attention deficit disorders or emotional interferences that impact student achievement.

Students are referred for special education services by school personnel or parents who are concerned about a child's lack of progress or success in meeting established grade level or age appropriate academic, physical, management or social benchmarks. After appropriate evaluations have been completed the Committee on Special Education (CSE) will review the test results and with the parent's consent, determine an appropriate individualized program.

The special education program serves the student by providing a variety of interventions aimed at improving the academic and social behavior of the child. All students, regardless of special education handicapping conditions are required to take all NYS assessments. Students will receive all testing accommodations as mandated by the IEP.

AIS- Academic Intervention Services

AIS programs provide mathematics and reading support for eligible students. Classroom and remedial teachers collaborate to meet the needs of children needing academic intervention and support. The reading intervention program is a tutorial program, which begins with targeted first to sixth graders who are in need of reading support.

The goal of the remedial program is to help the child develop a proficiency in reading and instill a love of literacy in each learner. The goal of the remedial mathematics program is to provide development in the skills of math computation, concepts, application and problem solving. The development of critical thinking and use of math manipulatives are key components of our math program.
